Ever get sick of your house and want to change your decorating style? Yeah, it happens to me quite often! (Just ask my family) I have gone through many phases- duck phase, cow phase, country phase, modern phase. One day I am in LOVE with my house, and a few years later I am so sick of everything and I want to do a total renovation! Sound familiar?! Since I don't have always have the money for that, I have to get creative and have learned to reuse and re-purpose many things. Today I am going to show you how to turn your artwork that no longer goes with your flow, into the perfect piece for your new style!
When I left my house in Pennsylvania 8 years ago, it was perfect! I had completely redone every room in the house (several times) and left no detail untouched. My color scheme for most of the house was red and olive green. I swore when I moved to Coastal Carolina that I would keep my beloved colors and not be swayed to the blue side! Well... I have changed, and so has my style! Something about living near a giant body of blue water makes me blue - in a good way.
I was looking for something to put in my new dining room when I spotted this artwork in the Pottery Barn catalog:
I loved this, but couldn't afford it! (It's still available online Pottery Barn)
I searched online to find something similar but cheaper, but couldn't find anything. Then the wheels started turning. lol What if I reused something I already had? Paint it myself? nah, I'm not that talented. Then I read the description of the piece and it said the artist was inspired by the Japenese art of "wabi-sabi", which is a method of dying fabric.💡
This was a print/ painting I bought when I was turning my Pennsylvania dining room, into a study.
Isn't it perfect?! Oh the rug!, the chairs!, (both from Target *see links below), mingled in with my Great Grandmother's cedar (hope) chest. Even a bit of cow lingers on here with a pillow from my cousin-in-law Ann. I bought the artwork at Ross for around $60. It was worth it just for the frame! Massive 4'x4', and chunky! It was made to look like an actual painting as the canvas had texture and dimension. It was attached to the frame very securely and had been sealed in the back with cardboard. It would have been very hard to find another canvas this exact size and costly!
So I decided I would use this piece and transform it into my vision. I scanned the Internet and Pinterest to come up with an idea of how to reuse the frame with my new color scheme. I wanted something removable in case I changed my decorating style again in a few years, and I found this great post on Apartment Therapy about using fabric as wallpaper and attaching it with liquid starch!
I was set to go!
I just had to find fabric and liquid starch. I decide on this fabric for the color and circle effect.

I found the liquid starch at Walmart, but I also posted a link below for you to order it online. I cleaned the surface of the painting with Windex to remove any dust and dirt.
I cut the fabric to the approximate size I needed.
I applied the starch using a small roller.
I attached the fabric and smoothed it out using a Spackle knife.
The fabric may stretch a little while its wet, so make sure its in the position you want it to be when it dries.
Let it dry overnight.
Go around the frame using a straight edge razor against the frame to trim off any excess fabric.
You're done!
I know these directions aren't exact, but your frame size style will not be the same as mine, so this post is to give you the general idea and inspiration to do your own.
Here is how it turned out! This is my living room in Wilmington, NC. I love how it goes in this room with my Pottery Barn dining table and Indigo Blue Runner
So go ahead and try it in your home! I would love to see you projects!
